Buying a Poodle
Buying a Poodle
You can find more detail about buying a Poodle by reading the drop down pages under this tab. At present these pages are still under construction. You can find more general information about buying a pure bred dog by visiting the Dogs NSW website and clicking on the Puppies tab.
The main issues to consider when buying a Poodle are:
• Is the Poodle the right dog for me?
Think about your lifestyle, your household, the financial commitment both at purchase and throughout the Poodle’s life, feeding, grooming, exercise, and training. Which is the right size and age of Poodle for you? Do you want a puppy or an adult Poodle? See the Characteristics page. Remember – only a quality, pure bred Poodle from a responsible breeder will have all the main characteristics of the breed.
• What do you want to do with your Poodle?
Do you want your Poodle to be a personal and household companion only or do you also want her to be a show dog, an obedience or agility dog, a farm dog, or other performance dog e.g. Dances with Dogs? See the About Poodles tab. What steps do you have to take to achieve your goals?
• How will you find a responsible breeder?
What is a responsible breeder? Where can you find a responsible breeder? How can you be sure that a breeder’s claims are true?
Check for more details in the Club's Puppy Register tab.
• What is a responsible breeder?
Is the breeder registered with ANKC and Dogs NSW (or for other states, the local state ANKC affiliate organisation)? Is a breeder a Member of a Poodle Club? Is the breeder meeting the conditions set out in the Dogs NSW or their state controlling body Code of Ethics and the Poodle Club of NSW Code of Ethics?
• How do you choose your pup, assess the quality and well-being of puppies, and assess the pup’s readiness to leave its breeder?
• What do you need to do to be ready at home for your new Poodle?
• Buyer Beware
Be aware that there are people selling puppies, both Poodles and Poodle related cross breeds, who exploit their dogs unethically to make money, regardless of the health, well being and quality of their dogs. To avoid disappointment, do your research carefully, and seek advice from the Poodle Club.
